Well, let's see. I could always recommend the Bible, but people tend to get a little cranky whenever you mention it. I can't imagine why; it's obviously a great book!

I could recommend Chinaberry Chuckles and the Land of the Woogies. Sure, the simple words and the cute, colorful cover might throw you off, but it's actually a very interesting look at society.

But no, I think I would recommend Oh, the Places You'll Go! by none other than Dr. Seuss. You've probably already read it, but I don't think it's the kind of book that could ever get old. Some people think it's too optimistic, but... how can you not like a book that tells you that you're smart and brave? How can you not like a book that tells you that you have the power to move mountains? How can you not like a book that's not afraid to tell you that not everything will be great... but even so, you'll still have the power to push forward? With all the people in the world who try to knock you down, how can you not like a book that exists to pick you up?

I wonder why there aren't more books like this one. I can't really think of any that come right out and say things like this:

You won't lag behind, because you'll have the speed.
You'll pass the whole gang and you'll soon take the lead.
Wherever you fly, you'll be the best of the best.
Wherever you go, you will top all the rest.

Mmmhmm. I would definitely recommend this book. I can only hope that you would, too.

There have been so many posts while I've been gone. I don't even know where to begin. What if everyone just tells me one thing that's happened to them over the past couple of weeks? It can be good or bad, but I hope it would be good!

A magic potion? Any kind of magic potion? One that could let me do anything I wanted to do? One that could give me anything I wanted to get? One that could let me go anywhere I wanted to go?

Hmm...

I already travel a lot for the show, so I don't think I'd get much use out of one that would fly me anywhere. I can usually buy anything I want now, too, so I don't think I need one that would give me anything. And I live in America, so I can do anything I want to do already!

But maybe I'd buy one that would prevent my hair from ever falling out. If I'm going to get older, I should get to keep all these lovely golden strands. Or maybe I'd buy one that would prevent me from getting wrinkles. I don't think I could live with the laugh lines that Murphy has. Maybe I could even buy one that would make me taller! Or prettier! To whoever nominated Corky's most recent post for you_rock: THANK YOU! It just so happens that I was having a perfectly awful day right up until I saw that in my inbox. So thank you thank you thank you; it means more to me than you could ever imagine. :)

What a beautiful picture. I’m willing to bet your eyes went straight to the heart shadow, right? You said to yourself, “How romantic!”, right? You looked at the way the light glistens against the ring and you said to yourself, “How beautiful!”, right? Well, don’t worry; I did all those things, too.

But did you read the words at all? Most of them are blurred, so of course they’re a little hard to read. Look at the ones that aren’t blurred, though.

The most visible chunk of words is to the left of the ring. It’s the definition of “lost”.

You can clearly read the “ruined or destroyed” part. Then there’s “denied” and “hardened”. “Unable to find the way”. “Helpless”.

It’s a little spooky, don’t you think?

But then if you look to the right of the ring, you can just barely make out the definition of “love”. “Warm attachment”. “Attraction based”. “Beloved person”. It’s there, but it’s so much smaller when you compare it to the other definition. You can’t even read a whole sentence on this one.

I wonder what that means. You don’t think the photographer intended for that to happen, do you? You don’t think they actually intended for the “lost” part to be so much clearer than the “love” part, do you?

I hope it wasn’t intentional. It would be too depressing if it was.

If there’s anyone who’s great and misunderstood in this world, it’s Miss America.

I know, I know. You’re tired of hearing me talk about when I was Miss America. But you’re in luck! This is about other Miss Americas, any Miss Americas. We’re all misunderstood, whether we care to admit it or not.

Lots of people see us as stupid, and I’ve never understood this. You can’t be stupid if you want to be Miss America. The judges ask some really tough questions, and you have to be able to answer them all with poise and dignity. You never quite know what questions they’ll ask, either, so you have to be prepared for anything from politics to geography. Let me tell you something: you’d better know your countries before trying to become Miss America. You don’t want to do something like forget where Africa is right in the middle of everything. Boy, was that embarrassing for Miss Ohio.

Now, we all know the old cliché that all Miss America wants is world peace. Well, we do want world peace, and community service is a great way to get the ball rolling. If you haven’t done a smidge of community service, then you don’t get to try to be Miss America. It’s as simple as that. We’re kind souls, and we really do want to make the world a better place. I met a ton of girls who had done some really beautiful things for their communities, like visited cancer patients and started gigantic fundraisers for homeless shelters.

What depresses me the most about this, though, is that people think we’re just supposed to be beautiful Barbie dolls, prancing around in swimsuits and high heels and smiling all the time. We do have to smile all the time, but you know what? In the end, all that really matters is that we’re beautiful on the inside. Sure, we have nice hair and nice smiles and we look really good in everything we wear, but the bottom line is that you can’t be gorgeous if you don’t have a gorgeous heart. You can’t have a gorgeous heart if you’re not smart and generous and loving, and these are all the things that Miss America really represents.

(PS: It’s not a beauty pageant! It’s a scholarship program.)
